Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in the Pacific theatre during World War 2, 1943-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official purposes. Many individuals identified are listed above, but while many others are identified in group portraits they are not named above. Many scenes show NZers in training exercises in New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands, including Bren carriers crossing rivers on raft & trestles erected by military engineers; signals; road construction; thatching and constructing buildings (the Works Construction Unit); amphibious training from invasion barges; unloading and landing supplies; transporting guns and equipment; bridge building; digging fox holes and camping in the jungle; jungle warfare; maintaining wireless communication; organising camouflage; repairing damaged weapons; use of local canoes for transportation; ordnance workshops; and weapon training. Many scenes show parades, and inspections, including the King's Birthday parade in New Caledonia; a church parade; the Hon Mr F Jones visiting NZ troops; visit of Hon W Perry; visit of General Freyberg; visit of Admiral Halsey (US); and visit of the Governor of New Caledonia. Sporting activities, including individual players and group portraits of various teams of rugby players, soccer teams, hockey teams, swimming teams and a carnival, boat races, athletics, jockeys and horse racing, wrestling and boxing; surf clubs including the Engineers' team, Infantry No 2 team, and the Signals' team. Daily scenes including food preparation and coking; an anti-mosquito campaign; a leave centre for pacific troops; a dance sponsored by the American Red Crosss Service Club, and a celebration of New Zealand Day at the club; casting votes for NZ elections and a visit of scrutineers overseeing the voting; NZEF Base Repertory Players and the Kiwi Concert Party; a Base Camp reception at the hospital in New Caledonia; a garden party held by the Officers' School; Xmas parcels for NZ troops in the advanced Pacific Base. Images linked with medical care in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Treasury Islands include hospitals; medical personnel including dental surgeons, opticians and nurses; convalescent depot; and evacuation and transportation of the sick and wounded; and scenes of funeral services and graves of NZ soldiers in the Solomon Islands. Description: An album containing prints relating to the Rotorua District and Maori tourism in particular. The images were taken by Leslie Hinge, ca 1900-1903, except for one image taken by Josiah Martin in 1890. Many of the images have short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations. Images show various subjects, including: - The whare whakairo (carved meeting house) Tokanganui-a-noho with a sign 'Ko Rawaho' for the ancestor Rawharo at Te Kuiti. - Games of bowls being played on the green at the Government Gardens, Rotorua, showing the band rotunda in the background. - Whare at Te Ngae pa, with Maori families sitting and standing outside, including a woman weaving baskets. - Mud pools and steam vents at Tikitere (Hell's Gate) and Whakarewarewa. Also the Wairoa geyser hole at Whakarewarewa being "soaped", with tourists looking on, and subsequently spouting. - The bush-lined Kaituna River and the Okere Falls, including a flume for a hydroelectric plant servicing Rotorua. - A small motor launch pulled up on the shore of Lake Rotoiti, with tourists aboard and Maori captain. - Scenes at Whakarewarewa village, including children penny diving from bridge and bathing in hot pools, kettles and kete (baskets) for cooking, and views of houses. Also images of the whare whakairo Rauru, one with Sophia Hinerangi and a man who may be Mita Taupopoki outside; and another with the caption "Sold to Berlin - 1904". Also portraits of Sophia and Bella Papakura. - Scenes at Ohinemutu, including interior and exterior shots of the whare whakairo Tamatekapua, bust of Queen Victoria with St Faith's Church beyond, children bathing, and a woman named Merepaea Paea washing clothes. - A waka taua (war canoe) being paddled on Lake Rotorua and shots of canoes being manoeuvred over obstacles in races. - Broad views of Waimangu valley with steam rising from vents, Lake Rotomahana with Mt Tarawera beyond, and the inlet on Lake Tarawera below Te Wairoa. Mud from the 1886 Tarawera eruption is still visible. - Hangi (earth oven) being prepared. - Men performing a haka near Whakarewarewa (this image taken by Josiah Martin). The front men standing hold weapons; the middle standing men hold flags; and the men at the back steer their canoes. Description: A long war canoe or waka taua, with many seated rowers, three men standing at prow, stern and in the centre. Headlands and hills are behind the canoe, with a fort visible on the headland on the left. Robley created several versions of this view, both as ink and wash drawings, and as finished watercolours. According to the text accompanying a watercolour version sold at Sotheby's, London, 15 February 1990, lot 121, the view represents the winning canoe in a race organised at Tauranga, Christmas 1864 (or 1865), by Captain Gilbert Mair, in honour of Robley. The canoe is landing on the Tauranga waterfront, at The Strand, opposite Spring Street. The redoubt visible along the crest of the foreland in the left background is Monmouth Redoubt.
