Collection comprises the personal and professional records of art dealer Peter McLeavey and the McLeavey Gallery. Collection includes correspondence with New Zealand artists such as Toss Wollaston, Colin McCahon, Richard Killeen, Gordon Walters, Michael Illingworth, Milan Mrkusich, Michael Smither, Ian Scott, Pat Hanly, Ray Thorburn and many others. The collection contains 560 exhibition files, one for each exhibition held in the gallery since opening day in 1968 up until 2015. These files contain correspondence with exhibiting artists and clients; catalogues; ephemera; photographs of exhibitions, artworks and artists; publicity relating to the exhibition; transport and shipping arrangements for the works purchased as well as correspondence with other institutions and private individuals marketing the works.
Arrangement: Received by the Library in boxes, including series of suspension files removed from filing cabinets. The correspondence and related papers, including photographic material originally enclosed with papers, were largely grouped in three distinct series, arranged by alphabet, name of artist, and general correspondence, including correspondence not specific to a named artist. The series of arrangement of correspondence and exhibition files was preserved during processing of the collection, with all material rehoused in archival enclosures and slides and transparencies separated for preservation and storage.
