He worked as an investment officer for an insurance company before becoming an art dealer in 1966, and establishing Peter McLeavey Gallery at 147 Cuba Street, Wellington, in 1968. Description: Comprises black and white and colour photographs of Peter McLeavey taken by John B Turner, Yvonne Todd, Craig Potton, and unidentified photographers. The photos show McLeavey at various points throughout his life. A black and white photograph taken by John B Turner shows McLeavey standing with his arms folded. The reverse contains a handwritten annotation indicating this photo was taken on 14 July 1968 in The Terrace, Wellington, and the inscription "To Hilary from Peter with love, 15/1/1969". Two colour photo-mechanical prints show McLeavey in a café or restaurant. In one photo he is next to a man that may be Paul Reynolds. Both prints are annotated "P Reynolds, 1988". A black and white photograph shows McLeavey sitting in his gallery next to a sculpture, and is annotated "INK 1989". A colour photograph taken by Craig Potton shows McLeavey standing on a tree-lined road in Pakawau. Three colour photographs were taken by Yvonne Todd in 2014, in McLeavey's bedroom. Two show McLeavey sitting on his bed and looking at the camera; the third is taken from the same angle and shows the bed without McLeavey. Prominent in all three photos is a sculpture of an armless figure of Jesus Christ in a crucifixion pose. Some of these photographs have previously been exhibited in the Adam Art Gallery's exhibition 'Still looking: Peter McLeavey and the last photograph', 6 October - 20 December 2018. Description: A collection of photographs collected by Peter McLeavey. Comprises historic photographic prints of early New Zealand, as well as portraits of McLeavey. Historic photographic prints of New Zealand include black and white photographs taken by James Bragge, George Henry Swan, the Tyree Brothers, Josiah Martin, the Burton Brothers, Frank A Coxhead, William Partington, and Frank Denton. There are a variety of subjects and scenes with a significant number showing Wellington and the Whanganui River area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Also includes a photograph album and a set of photochrom prints showing significant landmarks and scenic views from across New Zealand, taken for tourism purposes. Photographic portraits of Peter McLeavey were taken throughout his adult life by photographers including Craig Potton, Yvonne Todd, and John B Turner.
