Description

Photographs and papers relating to Jackson Bay and John Edward Meikle's service with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Egypt and Italy during World War Two.

Photographs comprise portraits and landscapes, including aerial photography, by Meikle, and commercial photographic souvenir prints of Egypt, a series of photographic prints of Jackson Bay and environs by Markham Carthew Lysons, loose prints and negatives of Jackson Bay and surroundings and some on loose pages with captions, all dated from circa 1930s to 1940s. Also two undated studio portraits.

Manuscripts comprise typescripts, personal and business correspondence, reports, invoices, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and printed matter, relating to New Zealand, Egypt, and Italy, mostly from the period 1930s-1940s.

Description: Photographic prints of Jackson Bay, New Zealand, taken by John Meikle and Markham Carthew Lysons, mostly undated, but featuring some documented events dated in the year 1939. Some prints stamped verso "Printed by Douglas Cox Ltd. Christchurch". Comprises three groups, a series of 27 large half-plate photographic prints, and two groups of small prints, one loose and the other mounted on 22 pages with captions. - Photographs documenting the construction of Jackson Bay wharf and scenery in the surrounding areas, including alpine views and a portrait of a penguin. - Photographs portraying the camp township at Jackson Bay, Lake Ellery, the YMCA Recreation Hall at Jackson Bay, post office, aircraft on the beach, construction of highway, "Sports at Okuru", and various vessels including 'Gael', 'Waihao' lighthouse steamer 'Matai', the Arawata River bridge under construction, Smoothwater River and Waiatoto River, also erection of masts at Air Radio Station. Also portrays staff working at Nolan Bros whitebait processing factory. - Photographs of ships, barges, and wharf construction at Jackson Bay, and scenic landscapes. Named individuals portrayed include "Mr & Mrs E J McEachen", Mrs McEachen is noted for editing 'The Jacksons Bay Chronicle', and the resident engineer in charge of public works at Jackson Bay "Mr J B Jackson", with another captioned "Mrs Jackson enjoying afternoon tea in the pretty garden of flowers and bush surrounding her home". Jackson Bay cemetery

Depicts historic cemetery, the corresponding print is accompanied by the following note: "70 years ago a settlement was established at Jacksons Bay, but failed. When putting a telephone line through the bush last year, workmen discovered this old cemetery." (PAColl-10550-2-49). In the typescript the caption states "Whilst engaged in erecting a telephone line through the bush, workmen of th emodern Jacksons Bay settlement, were surprised to come upon this old graveyard - a relic of the days of long ago." The inward correspondence comprises letter from James 'Jim' Thomson, writing care of his work address at Magistrates Court, Hokitika, on 19 May 1935, bearing the rubber stamped seals of "Magistrate's Court Hokitika", "The Seal of the Supreme Court New Zealand", and "Warden's Court Westland Mining District". Other letters dated Hokitika, 4 August 1935, 25 November 1935, 29 March 1936, 11 November 1936, 16 December 1936; addressed from 12 Hataitai Road, Hataitai, Wellington, 8 December 1937, 27 January 1938, and 24 April 1938; addressed from Magistrate's Court, Blenheim, 19 June 1938, and 14 August 1938. Also includes: - Dance ticket "The Y.M.C.A. Gym.
