Description: Bollard served with the Territorial forces in New Zeland during the first years of World War Two. In May 1943 he left New Zealand with the 9th Reinforcements for the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force aboard the `Dominion Monarch' bound for Egypt. He attended Signals School at Maadi Camp and left Egypt on 18 October aboard the `Nieuw Holland' bound for Sicily. He was attached to 28 Battalion and helped to provide its radio service. He remained with the Battalion for the remainder of the war and describes the Allied advance up through Italy. He witnessed the attack on Cassino and also describes his visits to various Italian cities, including Rome and Venice, while on leave. Bollard was awarded a rehabilitation bursary to study at Cambridge University and on 16 October 1945 he left Italy by train bound for France and then by sea to England. The diary covers the period from 1938 until 21 October 1945 and provides a detailed account of Bollard's experience during this period. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Physical Description: Typescript

War service in Egypt and Italy

Description: Photographs relating to Pearson's service during World War II, including scenes in Cairo, the Pyramids, the sphinx, agriculture and everyday lives of the locals; the swimming pool at the Alamein club; a group of soldiers camping by the Arno river; scenes in Rome and Florence; and the Scuola Aeronatica building where the Jayforce were housed prior to leaving for Japan. Most are views of local people and places but there is one of Pearson with Bob Platt on leave from Maadi, Pearson with army personnel at the NAAFI Club in Rome, and relaxing by Lake Timsah, Egypt Pearson sailed from New Zealand with the 15th Reinforcements, arriving in Cairo after the war was over. Pearson was transferred to the Postal Corps and and accepted in to the Jayforce. The first contingent for the Jayforce was formed in Florence in Nov 1945 and sailed for Japan in Feb 1946. Description: Interview with Tom Harrison. Born in 1922 at Drayton farm, Methven. Refers to his grandfather Henry James Harrison, his parents Thomas Solomon Harrison, Daisy Isobel Harrison (nee Smith), and siblings. Describes life on Drayton farm, growing oats, grass seed and wheat, had sheep and cattle for fattening. Recalls going to Methven District High School on horse and cart, and pursuits of swimming, rugby and athletics. Says left school in the Depression to work on the farm. Refers to being called up to join army in 1941 during World War Two. Says trained at Burnham camp for three months, home for Christmas 1941, then to Ashburton camp. Mentions had appendicitis, so went home, and did harvesting at Hawarden, North Canterbury. Says went into Air Force January 1943, trained at Levin, and at air gunners school in Blenheim. Left with 13th Reinforcements on the 'Dinata Castle' ship from Wellington, stopping at Perth, Fremantle, then over the Indian Ocean to Egypt. Mentions playing yuka on board. Trained for six weeks at Maadi Camp 1944, and had leave to sightsee at Pyramids, Sphinx and Cairo. Talks about leaving heat of Egypt to travel to snow in Bari, Italy. Details training in village, then back to the war at Forli. Says he was in the Div Q (support squadron of 2nd New Zealand Division) which was sent to support Maori Battalion. Details his role and driving Bren carrier. Refers to being sent to Padova where Colonel Jim Williams was wounded and a sergeant killed. Mentions partisans bringing German prisoners to the house. Says had leave in Venice at hotel procured by General Freyberg. Talks about going into Trieste from above, the role of Tito's mob and VE Day. Says saw Tom Currie and Natalie Currie, and had Methven reunion in Trieste. Recalls spending six weeks with anaemic dysentry in Bari hospital. Says the single men of the 13th, 14th, and 15th reinforcements had to go to Japan. Recalls voyage via Suez Canal, stopping in Singapore to let off those with measles, then to Hong Kong, arriving in Kure harbour, Japan. Says Div Cav (2nd New Zealand Divisional Cavalry regiment of 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force) was sent to Eta Jima island in March 1946. Describes visiting Hiroshima, Tokyo and seeing starving Japanese. Mentions those who went back to Hiroshima were exposed to radiation. Says shifted to mainland Japan and drove jeep for four months. Recalls voyage home to Lyttelton and meeting family at Ashburton train station. Talks about going shearing in Methven for year after return from war. Bought local farm by auction. Refers to marriage in 1947 to Kathleen May King and their children. Talks about growing wheat, barley, white clover. Mentions he had LIP (lease in perpetuity) land which he was able to buy at reduced price under Muldoon's government, and also an 82 acre farm block. The first is the photographs from the collection of Thomas Vernon Mitchell taken while he was serving in the army in the Middle East in the Second World War. They include tourist scenes of the ancient olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane; the city of the dead in Cairo; street scenes in Jerusalem, Tiberias and Aleppo; tombs of the caliphs in Cairo; the Dead Sea; the tower of King David, Jerusalem; the Hotel Yarkon, Tel Aviv; the citadel entrance, Aleppo; and Tiberias Hot Springs.
