Interview with Dick Cheyne born 1924 in Oamaru. Describes shifting around the South Island as he grew up, and leaving school at the age of 13 to work as a messenger boy. Recalls working as a delivery boy for Tanner's Fruit Shop (Proprietor Alec Tanner) in Christchurch and riding a tricycle. Mentions customers Wally Atack and Lady Wigram. Describes his career at New Zealand Railways in detail and his progression through the company. Talks about cycling being the main mode of transport for railway workers until the 1960s. Describes the changing technology of bicycles including gearing and suspension. Discusses cycle commuting and bike shops in Christchurch. Mentions various bicycle manufacturers including Bulters, Gammages and Jones. Mentions the Austral Star and Melvern Star bicycles. Describes the history of bicycle racing in New Zealand in particular the Canterbury region. Mentions various races including the Austral Wheel Race, Timaru to Christchurch, Round the Gorges and Tour de France. Mentions various Canterbury racing tracks including Lancaster Park and English Park.
