Description: Interview with Keith McLeod born 1950 in Christchurch. Talks about early childhood experiences with cycling. Describes becoming interested in mountain biking and building his own bike from parts in 1983. Discusses his obsession with mountain bikes, and how he would interrogate other mountain bikers he saw. Recalls various races in which he entered on his mountain bike, including the Karapoti Classic (1986 and 1989), also organising various mountain bike racing events in the Christchurch area. Discusses his experience of racing in the United States in 1988 at the World Championships. Discusses becoming involved in the bicycle trade industry in 1989. Initially working at Sam's Bike Shop in Christchurch and later opening his own bike stores in Christchurch including Chain Gang (March 1990), Bicycle Business, Catus Cycling and his current shop, Opawa Cycles (June 1997). Describes learning to become a bike mechanic and becoming a collector and restorer of old bikes. Description: Double-sided poster announces all the features of ther Petone Carnival. It shows four photographs of the "Queens" representing particular areas: Alma Coulson (Hutt Valley Softball Association), Mrs Annette Taylor (Hutt Soccer cricket Club), Miss Kay Williams (Petone RSA), and Rosina Clouston (Hutt Valley Indoor Basketball Association). Carnival events included a Juvenile Beauty parade, a decorated vehicle parade, free spot prizes. The brief carnival programme is shown at the lower left corner. The verso shows a grid of 30 detachable squares for a "Swap Sheet" contest. Each square advertised a product and contestants were encouraged to save the most of any one square. Description: John Hayes was born in Hastings in 1940. He spent his early years in Wellington returning to Hawkes Bay at the age of seven. Comments that he did not know his father who was overseas during World War II and then separated from his mother. Recalls living with his grandmother in Lower Hutt while his mother was matron at Wellesley College, Eastbourne. Recalls his mother remarrying in 1950. Describes being a boarder at Napier Boys High School and leaving school at the age of sixteen to go shepherding. Recalls that his parents drew a farm block in the Waikato. Describes working on a station milking cows and making butter. Talks about his marriage in 1966 and becoming manager of a farm inland from Wairoa. Describes working on another property near Wairoa and comments on relationships amongst staff. Mentions violence. Describes managing a property between Gisborne and Wairoa. Recalls Maori shearing gangs and a thriving rural infrastructure. Talks about hunting in the Ureweras, buying an old home and developing the land, an increase in land values and buying a smaller property at Tongoio. Mentions his wife's death from cancer. Recalls working with Elders Pastoral as goat co-ordinator, moving to Waipukurau as general agent and the devastation of Cyclone Bola. Description: Head and shoulders portrait of a New Zealander who amassed a large collection of New Zealand and Australasian paintings, drawings, prints, books, manuscripts, maps. The collection was sold to the National Library of Australia. Other portraits by Buhler of Nan Kivell are held by the National Library of Australia and by Te Papa. The portrait at Te Papa, also a pastel, shows Nan Kivell wearing a trilby hat. It was purchased in 1990, and at the time of purchase in London, the artist (who died in 1989) had four portraits of Nan Kivell in his studio.
