Description

Gives details of family background in England. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1909 and worked on a sheep farm at Hunterville. Enlisted and went into camp at Awapuni at Palmerston North. Gives details of voyage to Egypt, being escorted by the Ibuki and the capture of the 'Emden', also Webb breaking his neck during Neptune ceremony.

Recalls Cairo, the Battle of the Wazir and various military personnel including Captain MacDonnell, Colonel Malone, General Birdwood, General Godley. Describes training and the Turkish attack on Suez Canal in February 1915. To Gallipoli and describes the landing, reference also to the Daisy Patch. Wounded at Cape Helles and sent to Malta, comments on nurses. Returned to Gallipoli, comments on the ranking of the soldiers and officers. Describes the conditions: the lice, food. He contracted typhoid fever and was taken to Lemnos then to Hornchurch and later Walton-on-Thames.

On return to New Zealand he went onto a rehabilitation farm. Recalls the difficulties experienced. Gives details of the early RSA and views in general on the RSA.
