Assigned to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, New Zealand and Australian Division.

J H Milburn wrote brief daily entries about military actions undertaken, listed members of his platoon and whether they were killed, survived, wounded or died; he describes Gallipoli in considerable detail, and subsequent events, and his later dysentery and the various forms of treatment given. He writes of his time in hospital in Malta and in England and describes life outside hopsital in both places. An address list, abbreviations, notes on firing, currencies, phrases in Turkish, Egyptian and French, and a clipping by Paul Bolding `Name revives bitter memories' from the `Evening post' (1985) Source of title - Transcribed J H Milburn, grand-father of the donor, joined the NZ army in 1914, served at Gallipoli in 1915 and was discharged from the army in 1918. The diary covers 1915 only; it is not known if he kept other diaries. His regiment is given as the Taranaki Regiment of the Wellington Rifles. Description: One photograph album with images taken mostly by Stanley Gadfield Aglionby Burrowes, who was with the Wellington Mounted Rifles in World War I. The photos were taken in Egypt and the Middle East between 1915 and the end of the war. Album compiled by donor. Images document that Burrowes and the Mounted Rifles were involved in the defence of Egypt and the subsequent Middle Eastern campaign when the transport company that Burrowes was in was developed into an ambulance corps. Pictures show the ambulance train, the Camel Corps, horsedrawn sandcarts and the slow mule team. There are photos of the Mounted Rifle Camp, the Ambulance Camp, `the boys' relaxing, Bedouins, prisoners of war (Germans, Turks and Bedouins), graveyards at Alexandria (of troops from Gallipoli) and Romani and the towns of Luxor, Port Said, Rafa, Jerusalem and Cairo. Description: Album is the second part of a two-album record of the British campaigns in north-eastern Egypt and Palestine, 1916-1918. It is a record of the Palestine campaign after the capture of El Arish. Thus its story really begins at Rafa on the Egyptian/Palestine boarder and ends with General Allenby's triumphal entry into the city of "Jerusalem the Blessed" (his words) on 11 December 1917. As a record it presents a detailed account of the actions, movements, encampments, places, troops, countryside, and locals as experienced by a New Zealand officer participant. The photographs are well documented and identified. In relation to place names, spellings from books and maps have been used. Album spellings have been added to the "non preferred" slot in the place records, so that they are linked to the official place name spellings and can thus be used in a search. Description: Album is the first part of a record of the British campaign in north-eastern Egypt and Palestine from 1916-1918. It begins with views of Alexandria and Cairo where Australian and New Zealand Troops from Gallipoli began their rest, and recovery. There are views of the troops at the military training camp at Zeitoun where they were retrained and equipped for the Western Front and the defence of Egypt. In relation to the Palestine campaign, the album covers the driving of the Turks and their German allies out of north-eastern Egypt, the capture of the oases of Quatia and Romani, and the subsequent capture of El Arish. The album is a very good record of these events with much incidental detail. Cities, architecture, ruins, places, the locals, farming, crops and farm animals are all included. Photographs mainly taken in Egypt depict other military personnel including S S M Ebbitt with Sgt Curtis and Sgt Hines wounded in hospital, Corporal Ferguson of the 9th Squadron from Mohaka Wairoa, Major Armstrong, Father McDonald, D. McMillan, W. O'Donald, 9th Squadron officers and football team, Turk prisoners, military horses (feeding, watering, under fire, treking), desert patrol, Indian transport men, camel transports, military camps (Bir el Maler, Kirba, Romani), visiting ancient Egyptian tombs at Katia (Quatia), and an aeroplane which landed behind their lines. Includes a photograph postcard from W H Ebbitt to his brother Len (dated November 1917). Text of postcard transcribed by Gillian Dunkley. Description: Gives details of family background in England. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1909 and worked on a sheep farm at Hunterville. Enlisted and went into camp at Awapuni at Palmerston North. Gives details of voyage to Egypt, being escorted by the Ibuki and the capture of the 'Emden', also Webb breaking his neck during Neptune ceremony. Recalls Cairo, the Battle of the Wazir and various military personnel including Captain MacDonnell, Colonel Malone, General Birdwood, General Godley. Describes training and the Turkish attack on Suez Canal in February 1915. To Gallipoli and describes the landing, reference also to the Daisy Patch. Wounded at Cape Helles and sent to Malta, comments on nurses. Returned to Gallipoli, comments on the ranking of the soldiers and officers. Describes the conditions: the lice, food. He contracted typhoid fever and was taken to Lemnos then to Hornchurch and later Walton-on-Thames. On return to New Zealand he went onto a rehabilitation farm. Recalls the difficulties experienced. Gives details of the early RSA and views in general on the RSA.
