Description

Watercolours, lithographs, ink and pencil drawings and sketches, hand-written letters, portraits and newspaper clippings (mostly obituary notices), primarily by Simpson (one other pencil artist signing as MVB). Subjects and places include: an informal portrait of Simpson's father, James Simpson; a head-and-shoulders portrait of his mother, in pencil and Chinese white; obituaries and articles on his being the 'first war artist', including various reproduced photographs of Simpson; reviews of his autobiography, edited by George Eyre-Todd; and reviews for his other books 'The Buddhist praying-wheel' (1896) and 'The Jonah legend' (1899); pencil and watercolour sketches of Scottish scenes, including of the Forth Bridge; English scenes; European and North African scenes; sketches of Hyderabad, and other indian scenes; still lifes in detailed pencil drawings (by 'MVB'); letters from William Simpson to his cousin; lithographs of the ancient city of Jerusalem
