Description

Collection comprises three war diaries covering the three year period of Cargill's military service in World War Two, 1943-1945. Diaries cover leaving Linton Military Camp and heading to Wellington for embarkation, voyage to Egypt, life as a soldier fighting in Italy. Cargill was shot in Cassino and had a lengthy period of recuperation in Italian military hospitals. Returned to New Zealand by hospital ship in December 1945. Diaries recount the daily life of a soldier and provide a unique look into the activities of a patient and staff member of a military hospital.

Description: Volume begins for 1943 in the middle pages of the diary, continues to the end then begins again at the front of the diary in the lower half of the page. Diary covers military life during embarkation from Wellington and the voyage to Egypt. Cargill recounts daily life and also records the books he has read on the journey. Describes activities while training in camp and day trips to local sights and visits to the Army dentist. Involved in the Western Allies invasion of Italy in September 1943. Describes various military attacks his unit is involved in. Received a head wound fighting in Cassino and recounts his recuperation in an American Army hospital. Transferred to a general hospital in Naples and details life as a patient. Cargill is discharged from hospital but continues on as a carpenter working to the Command Sergeant Major. Description: Volume begings in Aug 1945. Cargill's condition re-graded to Grade E and he enlisted for the hospital ship to return to New Zealand. Prepares for the trip home, visits Alexandria and Cairo. Sails for New Zealand late November 1945, Cargill recounts shipboard activities and weather conditions.
