Sturm was a New Zealand academic and noted writer on the history of New Zealand and Australian literature. His achievements included editing the Oxford History of New Zealand Literature (1990, 1998), the drama section of the Oxford History of Australian Literature, a biography of Edith Lyttleton (G B Lancaster), and edited selections of the writing of Whim Wham (Allen Curnow), Frank Anthony, Christopher Brennan. At the time of his death he was nearing completion of a major biography of Allen Curnow.
He was also active in literary arts administration, serving on the NZ Literary Fund and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council
