Description

Comprises four histories submitted by A W Glassford in support of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station Award application. They cover the pre European and early settler use of the Matakanui Station area, the histories of Matakanui Station, Otago, the Glassford family, Dougalston farm situated on the former township of Drybread, and the Rankeillor farm property.

Original owners Henry (Harry) Gordon-Glassford (1764-1819) and his halfbrother James Glassford Gordon-Glassford (1771-1834) emigrated from Scotland to Australia and New Zealand purchasing 80,000 acres in the Lauder Survey District, 12 Km from Omakau, Central Otago. In 1864 the brothers took over the lease of Run 223 from Messrs Webster and Thomson. The run ran from the top of the Dunstan Range to the Manuherikia River, Lauder Creek and Chatto Creek. They operated under the name Glassford Bros. and the run became known as Matakanui Station. In 2008 the property was awarded the NZ Century Farm and Station Award to mark 100 years of continous ownership by one family.
