Description: Copy of hand-drawn map of the outer part of the Otago Harbour from Taiaroa Head to Port Chalmers. Shows a proposed reserve of land by Maori on the Taiaroa side of the harbour and a scattering of villages, the site of a flagstaff and the word 'settlement' in the middle of the reserve. No soundings are marked. John Barnicoat and William Davison were assistant surveyors on an expedition with Frederick Tuckett, the New Zealand Company's Chief Surveyor at Nelson, to find a suitable site for European settlement of Otago Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s) in 2 parts. Description: The first folder comprises a letter from W P Reeves (1 Mar 1899); an undated letter from Maori leaders referring to land grievances; a letter from McKerrow (3 Apr 1909) accompanied by a list of Otago place names given by him in 1861-1863; and a transcript of an interview with McKerrow. The second folder contains reports from MacKenzie on the Dardanelles campaign (1915) and notes on his experiences as High Commissioner in wartime London. Source of title - Supplied MacKenzie was a politician who was briefly prime minister in 1912. He had been part of the Ward Ministry from 1909-1912 and High Commissioner in London from 1912-1920. Topics include early settler history, including Maori, Pakeha and Chinese history. Some of the interviews were conducted in Maori, so will be a good resource for Kai Tahu language research [full transcripts are not present here but does include a summary of topics spoken about in the recordings]. Includes information about mahinga kai or food gathering practices, rock art, early farming history, sheep rustling and bushrangers. Description: Charles Burrows was born in 1871 and arrived in New Zealand with his parents in September 1874. His father Nathan Burrows was gardener in Invercargill and then for G M Bell at Waimea Estate near Riversdale. Discusses his early life and early Gore history. Charles Burrows was a successful nurseryman, Borough Councillor and was involved on school committees and church management but the tape does not include this latter material. Recalls aspects of his early life in Gore including school in the 1880s, the cost of his mother's home (ninety pounds) and the shop of E Christenson. Describes his apprenticeship to Invercargill nurseryman Mr Burrel (Burrell), working in a market garden in Gore, in a rabbit factory at Croydon Siding and at Castle Rock in Northern Southland. Mentions Waimea House, Wantwood and Croydon House. Describes beginning his East Gore nursery business in 1890. Talks about Robert McNab and his exploration of Lake Wakatipu with McKellar. Discusses the New Zealand Agricultural Company and The New Zealand and Australian Land Company. Describes gold fossicking near Gore and the very early days of the Waimea settlement. Description: Comprises four histories submitted by A W Glassford in support of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station Award application. They cover the pre European and early settler use of the Matakanui Station area, the histories of Matakanui Station, Otago, the Glassford family, Dougalston farm situated on the former township of Drybread, and the Rankeillor farm property. Original owners Henry (Harry) Gordon-Glassford (1764-1819) and his halfbrother James Glassford Gordon-Glassford (1771-1834) emigrated from Scotland to Australia and New Zealand purchasing 80,000 acres in the Lauder Survey District, 12 Km from Omakau, Central Otago. In 1864 the brothers took over the lease of Run 223 from Messrs Webster and Thomson. The run ran from the top of the Dunstan Range to the Manuherikia River, Lauder Creek and Chatto Creek. They operated under the name Glassford Bros. and the run became known as Matakanui Station. In 2008 the property was awarded the NZ Century Farm and Station Award to mark 100 years of continous ownership by one family. Quantity: 4 Electronic document(s).
