Loose papers from Cowan's copy of Gudgeon's 'Reminiscences of the war in New Zealand' includes newspaper clippings, research notes and a letter to Cowan from Tom Ryan from Taupo writing about Te Kooti's escape from Whare Kauri (Chatham Island) in particular he gives an account of why Te Kooti's uncle was thrown overboard, that Ryan is retelling after speaking to an eye witness who was on board the 'Rifleman'.
