Matchbook containing two matches inscribed "Union Line", shows two illustrative panels: Front shows an illustration of the green-hulled steamship "Awatea" (1936-1942) with a small tugboat at lower left. The back panel shows the red flag of the Union Line inside a white lifesaver.

The matchbook, beautifully coloured, probably dates from 1936-1940 when the ship was being used a a passenger ship, rather than from the time it was painted grey for use as a troop ship in the Second World War.
