Description: Photograph album and accompanying loose prints, of images chiefly relating to World War 1. Images taken 1917 and circa 1917. Photographer(s), and compiler of album, are unidentified. Includes images of: troops and nurses and of naval ships. Also some family pictures. Some images have captions on the backs, in at least two different hands. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). 12 b&w original photographic print(s). Provenance: World War 1 album handed into Hataitai Salvation Army Op Shop approximately 2005. Not required by shop so retrieved by donor.

Description: Photographs collected by Percy Cecil Hurst during his service in World War One, 1917-1918, and compiled in an album by his wife Margery Hurst in 1918. Photographer(s) unidentified. Most images relate to the voyage from Wellington to Britain on board the troopship 'Ulimaroa' with the 34th Reinforcements. Photographs featuring the Panama Canal, in particular locks and related machinery. Other views taken from on board the ship identify coastal barracks near New York, Hampton Roads, Balboa, and Pedro Miguel. Also photographed are soldiers seated on deck, an alarm parade, and other military transport ships travelling in convoy, Hurst appears in a number of shipboard photographs including wearing light-coloured clothing with a dark belt (standing between Lieutenant Gow and Lieutenant Peace), in a photograph of the gun crew where he is the only one wearing a lemon squeezer hat, and wearing a life jacket with the text "FRONT. ADULT OR CHILD'S LIFEJACKET". Also identified are Lieutenant Cock, Lieutenant De Maus, Captain Anderson, Chef Officer Jones, Lieutenant Blomfield, Lieutenant Toon, Lieutenant Crawford, Lieutenant Peat, and Captain Ward. Album also contains a photograph of a Wellington wharf as the ship departs, views of Liverpool and the River Mersey, and two photographs of Ewshot Camp, England, 1918. Description: Shows the off-ramp of the ship "Germany" with leader leaning over the rails to watch four disembarking figures: General de Gaulle, Josef Stalin, Franklin D Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. Loaned for exhibit to the Haus der beschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn, for an exhibition entitled: :Das vereingte Deutschland in der Karikatur des Ausland". (Germany since the fall of the wall, in the eyes of the foreign political cartoonist). This exhibition was on display from June 1994 to June 1995. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Matchbook containing two matches inscribed "Union Line", shows two illustrative panels: Front shows an illustration of the green-hulled steamship "Awatea" (1936-1942) with a small tugboat at lower left. The back panel shows the red flag of the Union Line inside a white lifesaver. The matchbook, beautifully coloured, probably dates from 1936-1940 when the ship was being used a a passenger ship, rather than from the time it was painted grey for use as a troop ship in the Second World War.
