Comprises copy of photograph of J H Milburn and copy from page of his diary; introduction by donor describing J H Milburn, his background, life, time and experiences in the army and other matters; copies of maps showing campaign movements, introduction and edited transcription by Grant Milburn, of diary kept by J H Milburn. J H Milburn wrote brief daily entries about military actions undertaken, listed members of his platoon and whether they were killed, survived, wounded or died; he describes Gallipoli in considerable detail, and subsequent events, and his later dysentery and the various forms of treatment given. He writes of his time in hospital in Malta and in England and describes life outside hopsital in both places. An address list, abbreviations, notes on firing, currencies, phrases in Turkish, Egyptian and French, and a clipping by Paul Bolding `Name revives bitter memories' from the `Evening post' (1985)

J H Milburn, grand-father of the donor, joined the NZ army in 1914, served at Gallipoli in 1915 and was discharged from the army in 1918. The diary covers 1915 only; it is not known if he kept other diaries. His regiment is given as the Taranaki Regiment of the Wellington Rifles. According to the donor, the transcription by Grant Milburn was `compiled and edited' by him.
