Description

Album begins in Trieste, Italy, in 1946. As well as views of the town there are pictures of allied occupying troops parading, Tito Youth marching, and communists landing illegally from small boats in the harbour. Most of the rest of the album records a trip through Italy and France made by Perry and a group of friends during 1946-1947. A large part of the album contains images of the ruins and antiquities of Rome, Ostia, Veii, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. A page of photographs record the gigantic war memorial and cemetery at Redipuglia. Commissioned by Mussolini, it commemorates a hundred thousand soldiers of the Italian Third Army who died in the First World War. There are three breaks filled with images of England. One is of a house and garden at Wappenbury, just south-east of Coventry, another is of unidentified rural scenes and friends and family. The third is two pages of the 1951 motor racing events at Silverstone which was the venue for the Grand Prix of Britain.
