Description: Lantern slides showing historical sites and scenic views in Italy, Switzerland, France, England, and unidentified countries. The images were taken ca 1950s by unidentified photographers. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Buildings and ruins in Rome and the Vatican City, such as St Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. Two images of a middle-aged woman, probably a companion of the photographer, standing in the streets (she also appears in image of Lake Garda). - Notable places in other Italian cities, including the basilica in Assisi, the Mausoleum of Theodica in Ravenna, the Ponte de Vecchio in Florence, and Genoa Harbour. Also buildings in Venice, including the Rialto, St Mark's Basilica, and the Palazzo Ducale. Six of the images of Venice are in colour. - Scenes among the ruins of Pompeii, including the forum and the House of the Faun. - Two street scenes in the Swiss town of Gruyeres; grape vines near Geneva; and two images of the river running through the French town of Annecy, one showing the Palais de l'Isle. - The front gate of Hampton Court, near London. Description: Album begins in Trieste, Italy, in 1946. As well as views of the town there are pictures of allied occupying troops parading, Tito Youth marching, and communists landing illegally from small boats in the harbour. Most of the rest of the album records a trip through Italy and France made by Perry and a group of friends during 1946-1947. A large part of the album contains images of the ruins and antiquities of Rome, Ostia, Veii, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. A page of photographs record the gigantic war memorial and cemetery at Redipuglia. Commissioned by Mussolini, it commemorates a hundred thousand soldiers of the Italian Third Army who died in the First World War. There are three breaks filled with images of England. One is of a house and garden at Wappenbury, just south-east of Coventry, another is of unidentified rural scenes and friends and family. The third is two pages of the 1951 motor racing events at Silverstone which was the venue for the Grand Prix of Britain. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Poster shows an illustration of the Island Bay band rotunda atop a high tower reminiscent of the Pharos of Alexandria, with crowds of people at its entrance on the shore of the Bay. The view is as if seen from a high point above the island of Island Bay looking towards the shore. In the left backgroun is the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, and in the left foreground are the Hinging Gardens of Babylon and the Pharos of Alexandria. In the right distance are the Great Pyramid of Ghiza and the statue of Zeus at Olympia. Nearer at the right are the Mausoleum of Helicarnassus and the Colossus of Rhodes on the shore. A fleet of fishing boats is moored between the island and the shore, with pennants flying ready for the boat ceremony. The whole illustration has been superimposed upon a backgroun of old torn and taped paper. Other Titles - Eight wonders of the Ancient World ... Description provided by donor: "Miss Marion Steven is best known for founding the James Logie Memorial Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. This oral history project with Marion’s family, friends, past students and colleagues reveals the depth of her character and her lasting influence on the lives of those who were close to her." The interviews cover Steven’s: personal life and family relationships; professional life; academic achievements; contributions to academia, education, and local community; character and personal values; independence; achievements as a woman; generosity; and approach to teaching.
