Description

The Maori place names and old historical sites of Horowhenua together with a pictorial record of Maori artifacts and customs. Also place names etc elsewhere in New Zealand (Vol 1, figures 147-334). Includes maps and diagrams. Images show eel weirs and traps in the Hokio Stream; stake-fields in Lake Horowhenua which were constructed by Maori to impede enemy canoes, and which were exposed above water level by the lowering of the lake in 1926; artifacts in various collections, including kumete, waka-huia, stone adzes etc.; views of the Takihiku meeting house belonging to the former pa called Pua-o-Tau (figs 198-202); porch of Poutu meeting house at Whakawehi kainga near Shannon (fig 204); site of Pakakutu Pa, Otaki; site of the Wairarawa Maori burial area where artifacts were found by Arthur Black in Feb 1932 (figs 210, 213, 223-224); carved meeting house Te Poho-o-Kahungunu at Porangahau (fig 233); funeral ceremonies on 17 April 1932, after the death of Hema Te Ao, at Raukawa meeting house (undergoing reconstruction at the time) and Rangiatea Church, service taken by Rev. Description: Three types of stone adze, in the possession of Mr R A Prouse, Levin. Specimen on left: splay, broad-edged shape, from Turakina. Length 4 inches, breadth 2.75 inches, cutting edge 2.75 inches, breadth of butt 1.75 to 2 inches, thickness 1 inch, colour black with faint mottlings. Specimen in centre: from Mr J Hill's run, Hokio Beach Road, Levin. Rudely chipped except close to cutting edge; triangular cross-section; length 5.75 inches, breadth 2 inches, cutting edge 2 inches, thickness 1.25 inches; of black, cherty, fine-grained greywacke or indurated argillite. Specimen on right: from R A Prouse's garden, Makomako Road East, Weraroa. Fine cutting edge and well-ground bevels meeting at a rather obtuse angle; cutting edge narrows in; length 6.375 inches, breadth 1.625, cutting edge 1.125 inches, butt 2.25 inches long & breadth from 1 to 1.25 inches, thickness 1.75 inches; of light green chertose rock with patches of black carbonaceous argillite (almost certainly from Tararua range). Description: Tangi of Hema Te Ao at Raukawa Meeting House with mourners and display of paintings and portraits of relatives and ancestors of deceased. Photographed by George Leslie Adkins on the 17th of April 1932 The meeting house in the photograph is Raukawa I. This was built in 1853, but by the late 1920s had become delapidated. When this photograph was taken the carvings had been removed as the meeting house was undergoing reconstruction. It was replaced by the present Raukawa II which opened in 1936.
