Description

Shows in the right foreground, a fishing boat with one end raised and thickened, trailing a net on an outrigging in the water. l boats further off, and the shore in the background shows dwellings at the water's edge. There are mountains in the background.

Plate 167 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist, and Chavannes as the engraver. However, the engraving in the Italian edition is cruder.

See engraving after Captain R J Elliot, at C-008-003, showing the ship "John Williams" in the Bay of Hauhine [sic]. The background detail appears to be related to the present work, and indeed must be the only part of the picture to have been copied from Elliot, as the "John Williams" was launched in 1844, supposedly well after Elliot was in Tahiti.
