Description

Contains material relating to James Smith Department Store dating from the 1840s until the early 1990s. Comprises:

1. Shop buildings. The various buildings occupied by James Smith from the 1840s until the 1990s. Also the construction of a new store in the Hutt Valley in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Shops in other parts of New Zealand, and in Australia and America from the late 1970s to the late 1980s-early 1990s.

2. Shop window displays. These date from ca 1936 until the late 1980s. From the late 1970s many of the views of shop window displays depict places in other parts of New Zealand, and in Australia and America.

3. Shop interiors. These date from the late 1960s and most are from the late 1970s. They include many views of shop interiors in other parts of New Zealand, and in Australia and America.

4. James Smith Christmas and other parades from 1959 until the early 1990s. There are also colour photos of parades in Hawaii taken about ca 1984.

5. James Smith staff sports teams from the period ca 1929-1954

6. General material including some staff social occasions, presentations, and portraits.

7. Photographs relating to the sinking of the Wahine, 1968.
