Empire Airmail (New Zealand). [Envelope. ca 1938-1939]

Description: Unused envelope shows a Short S23 Empire Flying Boat superimposed over a map of much of the world with the countries of the British Empire coloured in red. New Zealand is at the lower right and Britain at the top left. The Empire Airmail Scheme started in 1937 connecting the UK and South Africa. The second stage to Singapore started in February 1938, and the final stage to Australia and New Zealand started on 26 July 1938. The Sydney to Singapore leg was operated by Qantas with the rest of the journey by Imperial Airways. The New Zealand to Australia leg was still by sea.
