Collection comprises World War One diaries (1915-1919). Also later work diaries kept by Munro. These recount his daily activities, some financial records and his attendances at Sunday Mass (1939-1964).

Munro served as a trooper with the 4th Squad Wellington Mounted Rifles, 7th Reinforcements, NZEF during World War One. Later worked as a road construction worker in the Taranaki region.

Description: Diary begins with embarkation on 9 Oct 1915 from Wellington. Details shipboard life aboard the `Navua' including sporting activities, weather conditions and other passing vessels. Arrived in Albany, Western Australia on 21 Oct 1915 to link up with the Australian contingent. Arrived in Colombo on 4 November 1915 and Munro relates adventures ashore. Departs 6 Nov 1915 across the Indian Ocean, arrives in Suez, Egypt for disemarkation on 21 November 1915. Diary continues with life inside the camp at Zeitoun, Cairo which includes mounted drills, regular church services and care for the horses. Comment is made on field trips to the Nile River and the Pyramids. Diary also includes addresses and enlistment details for Hector George Munro from Te Kiri, Taranaki. Enclosures - The front flap of the diary has enclosed a lock of hair wrapped in brown paper and a newspaper article from a Honolulu newspaper detailing the retirement of Hector G Munro from the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (1 Oct 1954).
