Buhler, Robert, 1916-1989 :Rex Nan Kivell, CMG 1969

Head and shoulders portrait of a New Zealander who amassed a large collection of New Zealand and Australasian paintings, drawings, prints, books, manuscripts, maps. The collection was sold to the National Library of Australia.

Other portraits by Buhler of Nan Kivell are held by the National Library of Australia and by Te Papa. The portrait at Te Papa, also a pastel, shows Nan Kivell wearing a trilby hat. It was purchased in 1990, and at the time of purchase in London, the artist (who died in 1989) had four portraits of Nan Kivell in his studio. He had done a series of pastel portraits of artists and dealers in London in the late 1960s
