From the Te Ara website: “Canterbury's centennial celebrations in the summer of 1950–51 featured two celebratory processions. The first was '100 years of progress', which was a historical pageant. The second was a floral procession reflecting Canterbury's pride in the fertility of its soil and Christchurch's identity as the garden city. This was the float of Hay's department store, which expressed the province's continued loyalty to the British monarch”

Description: The front cover of this greeting card, published by Hays department store, known as "the friendly store" shows a coloured photograph of one of the floats in the Canterbury Centennial floral procession at the beginning of 1951, with a crown and orb on a red cushion, the whole float composed of flowers. Historical note - In the summer of 1950–51, two celebratory centennial processions were held. The first was an historical pageant, "100 years of progress". The second was a floral procession reflecting Canterbury's farming riches, and Christchurch’s identity as the garden city. In 1948 owner James Hay had initiated an annual Christmas parade with floats depicting familiar nursery rhymes; it is likely that this Crown Jewels float was also constructed by Hays. Exhibited in ‘Humble: the life of 100 small objects’, exhibition curated by Barbara Lyon, in the Turnbull Gallery, National Library of New Zealand, 27 August - 17 November 2017.
