Detailed watercolours of New Zealand plants, showing flowers, berries and leaves. Most specimens drawn in the Wanganui region, home of the artist.

Provenance: Prepared for the New Zealand Company in 1842 by the artist. Several lithographed as illustrations to E. J. Wakefield's "Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand" published London, 1845. Presented to the Library of the Royal Colonial Institute by Sir Frederick Young, vice-president, and son of G. F. Young, an active member of the New Zealand Company.
Transfers: The plant specimens were donated to the Museum of New Zealand in 1982 by the Alexander Turnbull Library..

Description: A branch of lancewood 'Mr Tiffin' mentioned in the inscription, is probably Henry Stokes Tiffen, a horticulturist who arrived in Wellington at the same time as Martha King. Exhibited in 'Wild Things: Botanical and Zoological Art from the Alexander Turnbull Library' exhibition, National Library Gallery, 22 November 1998 - 21 March 1999. Inscriptions: Recto - above image - Folio C No. 39. Also 'Top' [to explain that the leaves grow downwards from the branches and that the inscription has been wrongly entered upside-down] In pencil: This is the length of the leaves of this curious plant. Where they join the stalk is so flexible as to be moved by the least wind. It grows to about 6 feet. The stem becoming thicker towards the foot.
