British Museum (Natural History): Botanical plates from Banks' Florilegium and the seco...

Date: [ca 1894-1899]

By: British Museum (Natural History)

Reference: B-026/027

Description: Black and white proof prints from the British Museum (Natural History) of copperplate engravings of botanical specimens after watercolours by various artists from sketches made by Sydney Parkinson on James Cook's first voyage, prepared for Banks' Florilegium, and plates illustrating New Zealand plants collected by Johann Reinhold Forster and his son Georg Forster on James Cook's second voyage. The botanical plates in this collection depict specimens collected in New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Tierra Del Fuego, and the Society Islands. See also 'Banks Florilegium' published by Alecto Historical Editions, 1980-1990 (https://www.alecto-historical-editions.com/). Records describing prints illustrating New Zealand plants include descriptive Scope & Contents notes. Most of the prints have scientific binomial names inscribed in the lower margin recto by Thomas Kirk. Arrangement: The prints are arranged in two groups, the first being the plates from Banks' Florilegium (B-026), and the second are the plates based on plants collected in New Zealand by the Forsters on Cook's second voyage. Six sets of proof prints of engravings were taken from copperplates in the period circa 1894-1899 by the British Museum (Natural History), now known as the Natural History Museum, London. Quantity: 7 box(es). 642 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Copperplate engravings, black and white proof prints, sizes vary. Provenance: In 1978 Ellis noted: "The plates came into the possession of the British Museum, who eventually (this century?) had six only copies of each print made. One of these six sets (each of more than 600 prints) was presented to the New Zealand Government, and after a sojourn in the old Education Department was deposited in the Alexander Turnbull Library. A second set is owned by the Auckland Institute and Museum. The New Zealand botanist Sheila Natusch carefully examined the prints in the Turnbull set, and has identified as far as possible the New Zealand items, numbering about 200 plates." (See Enid Margaret Ellis, 'Early prints of New Zealand, 1642-1875', Christchurch: Avon Fine Prints, 1978, page 314).
