Description

E-455-f-054-1 = Hickson & Co, Colonial Hospital, Ordnance Store and Fitzherbert's Store, 4 lithographs on a single sheet, the illustration to: An account of the earthquakes in New Zealand (Sydney, Printed by D. Wall, 1848); These lithographs are thought to be after drawings by Robert Park. E-455-f-054-2 = Text of the above, from the New South Wales Sporting and Literary Manazine and Racing Calendar. E-455-f-054-3 = clipping from the New Zealand Spectator, January 25 1855, and E-455-f-054-4 = clipping from the same source, February 24, 1855, both recounting the damage sustained in Wellington from the 1855 earthquake.

The 1848 'Account' is annotated by Pearse 'D[itt]o repeated with treble violence in 1855'.

Pearse has included on page 53 of his album another copy of the lithographs showing the 1848 earthquake damage (E-455-f-053). The copies on page 53 have been cut into three separate sections, one for each image.

Description: A newspaper account of the effects of the severe earthquake of 23 January. It includes a report on the floor of the harbour rising by 2 feet; the tidal wave of the day of the earthquake; its centre being apparently in the Wairarapa; its being felt in the South Island 'feebly' as far away as Otago, but severely in Marlborough and Nelson; major slips on the Rimutaka Range. Description: Top to bottom, four buildings badly damaged in Wellington's 1848 earthquake: Fitzherbert's Store, Ordnance Store, Colonial Hospital and Hickson & Co. The illustration to: An account of the earthquakes in New Zealand (Sydney, Printed by D. Wall, 1848) Pearse has included on page 53 of his album another copy of the lithographs showing the 1848 earthquake damage (E-455-f-053). The copies on page 53 have been hand-coloured and cut into four separate sections, one for each image. These image are 'drawings from the pencil of Mr Robert Park, of Wellington' according to the Account which they illustrated. The initials E W 1848 appear lower left, below the view of Hickson & Co and are likely to be those of a Sydney lithographer, probably those of Edwin Winstanley, the lithographer for the New South Wales sporting and literary magazine, in which these lithographs first appeared. The copy lacks a page of lithographic illustrations of the damage sustained by 4 masonry buildings in Wellington. Pearse has annotated the copy on the cover: 'Do. repeated with treble violence in 1855'. Further annotations are p. 4 '1855. One grand shock 3 times more severe than this [1848 shock] with success.al shocks to the day of making this note, 13 Feby / 55. The like to 20th Feby.'
