Two head and shoulders portraits of Maori men. Both have their hair bound up and wear head, neck and ear adornments. The man on the left wears a flax piupiu
Derived from an engraving by Copia after Piron, published in J J Labillardiere Atlas ... du voyage a la recherche de la Perouse... (Paris, 1800). Two Maori men came out in canoes to D'Entrecasteaux's ships near Cape Maria van Diemen in March 1793 and were drawn by the artist on board, Piron. The younger man on the right subsequently came to be identified as a young womanto
