Description: Photographs taken by John Dobree Pascoe and others in the Southern Alps. They include views of mountain ranges, glaciers and valleys; mountain huts and life enjoyed by the mountaineers. Most of the photographs are fully described, with names of people usually given with initials and surnames, or nicknames. Landscapes too, are mostly fully described, with peaks and routes traversed marked on the images. The album includes a map of the Rakaia-Mathias River area, drawn by E. Porter; a map of the "Three pass route" across the Southern Alps, drawn by Len Boot (p. 003); two extracts from the New Zealand Alpine Journal hand-written by J D Pascoe (from Vol. IV, no. 18, p. 209-210; and Vol. IV, no. 18, p. 213-214); and a photograph of a painting by A E Wildey, with caption "Artist's versin of Carrington Peak" (p. 028). Pages 89-94 show the preparations and work undertaken by a large rescue party involved in searching for two school teachers, B Robbins and H D Smith, who died while attempting to cross the Harman Pass, en route from Hokitika to the Bealey. Description: Views of the Mangatarera Stream and Mount Holdsworth opens a record of a climb to the summit of Holdsworth. The party consists of six women and about five men. There are views of the stream and the swing bridge leading to the Holdsworth track; several shots of the Mountain House with the climbing party arranged along the veranda, and Mr McGregor's party who had arrived on horseback to fix the water tank; the climbing party grouped in the bush on the way up the mountain and on the open alpine ridges; a surveyors tent in the alpine tussock; the party eating beside the Holdsworth Trig; views of the Tararua Ranges from the summit of Mount Holdsworth. Interspersed among the main image groups are photographs of a trip to Rotorua. This involved a group of people in two motor cars. There are images of the Hamurana Stream and Springs at Rotorua, and of children diving for pennies at Whakarewarewa. Views of mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, the Mangaehuehu Stream, the Crater Lake and the crater on Ngauruhoe, and mountaineers crossing the ice field on Ruapehu and climbing Ngauruhoe. There is a view of Matterhorn Peak the name of which was changed to Girdlestone Peak in 1922. Two images of a surveyors' camp in the Waimarino Bush. The Tern Arch and Little Hawke's Crag on the Buller Gorge road. A view of Lake Tarawerea from the top of Mount Tarawera. The final photograph is a view along the beach to Pencarrow Head, Wellington. Pasted inside the front cover is a cutting from `The Weekly News', Wednesday, December 26, 1945, entitled `New Zealand's highest memorial' by JWG, describing the renaming in 1922, of Matterhorn Peak (Tongariro National Park) to Girdlestone Peak in honour of Hubert Earle Girdlestone after he was killed in action in August 1918. Description: Album compiled by the Railway Action Committee of the Nelson Provincial Progress League to illustrate the need for there to be action over the neglected Nelson to Glenhope railway Part one shows scenes of railway decay; part two is scenes on the "borrowed" line from Glenhope to Gowanbridge; the third part shows areas where hydro-electric schemes and supplies of timber for power would enable the railway line to be fully built and developed. Description: Album created by G E Mannering, some photographs taken by him. A number of these are of children, only identified by nick-names, or Christian names; and one of an older man in a top hat is named `Grandad'. Several views of the children are taken at the beach at New Brighton in 1893. An interior photograph of an office `The consulting desk' was taken by `HMP'. Photographs also include a scene of hay making, and several of scenes relating to sheep farming, including sheep drafting, and one of 120 bales of wool from `Double Hill Estate' loaded onto four wagons, towed by W.A. McLaren's traction engine. Other scenes in Christchurch include the Christchurch Cathedral; and early photographs of Christ's College, when the buildings were in `corrugated iron Tudor' style; and a house with a century plant (agave americana) in the foreground. The rest of the scenes are mixed, with a few tourist scenes of Maori outside a meeting house, and a group in a hot spring at Tokaanu, and a newspaper cutting with photograph of Rewi Maniapoto from the Christchurch Press (no date). Description: Photographer unidentified. Scrapbook originally owned by Muriel Smith, a noted pianist. Contains a wide range of photographs and ephemera relating to her and her parents, Mr and Mrs George Smith of Gisborne, dated circa 1895 to circa 1930s. Photographs include studio and amateur portraits of unidentified men, women, girls and groups; a group standing outside a single storey house with verandah; and several of groups outside a large two storied house, presumably their home at 'Berwen', Grey Street, Gisborne. Ephemera items include postage stamps and stickers; Masterton Girls' Collegiate School certificate for Miss Black, 1895; Christmas cards; dance and garden party invitations; dinner menus; a toast list; riddles [from Christmas crackers?]; an advertisement for Gisborne City Hall recital of Len Barnes and Muriel Smith, 1927; and a postcard for United Treat Movement 1913-14 for State School Children of Poverty Bay District organised by Mr and Mrs George Smith. Newspaper clippings include a photograph of students outside Kaiti Girls' College, Gisborne; items about a toast made by George Smith; Muriel Smith returning from two months study in Wellington, 1929; Mrs G Smith having a literary afternoon, having a bridge and tea dance, and a Christmas Eve party; a musical recital with Miss M Smith and Mr L Barnes; and a review of a series of international concerts organised by Muriel Smith and Mr Carrington Wellby, 1930. Description: One photograph album with images taken mostly by Stanley Gadfield Aglionby Burrowes, who was with the Wellington Mounted Rifles in World War I. The photos were taken in Egypt and the Middle East between 1915 and the end of the war. Album compiled by donor. Images document that Burrowes and the Mounted Rifles were involved in the defence of Egypt and the subsequent Middle Eastern campaign when the transport company that Burrowes was in was developed into an ambulance corps. Pictures show the ambulance train, the Camel Corps, horsedrawn sandcarts and the slow mule team. There are photos of the Mounted Rifle Camp, the Ambulance Camp, `the boys' relaxing, Bedouins, prisoners of war (Germans, Turks and Bedouins), graveyards at Alexandria (of troops from Gallipoli) and Romani and the towns of Luxor, Port Said, Rafa, Jerusalem and Cairo.
