Description

Shows a portrait of the back view of Tacouri (a Te Hikutuu chief, aka Te Kauri, Tacoury), a tattooed man, wearing feathers in his hair, and holding a blanket or cloak in front of him. The tattooing is on the buttocks and legs. (Identified in Anne Salmond's "Two worlds" (1991), page 373).

This work is from an original drawing by an unknown artist on Marion Dufresne's voyage, 1772 (it also bears similarities to a drawing of Ranginui, a Ngaitahu chief, with tattooed buttock, by Pottier de L'Orme, on de Surville's 1769 voyage).
