Description

A reproduction of Brees' watercolour showing the Catholic Chapel on the corner of Boulcott and Manners Streets, the site later occupied by the church of St Mary of the Angels. On the road or path in the centre foreground, a man in a suit and top hat stands with two women. The single-level wooden church has a cross on the ridgepole, and a bell hung from a frame in the grounds some metres away. At the left is a shed, a barrel and a sawhorse. At the right a couple look down from a slightly raised path on a slope, and there are hills in the background.

This digital print was designed and printed by New Zealand Micrographic Services Ltd, in 2008.

Accompanied by a sheet giving the quotation, and the location of the original.

This image was reproduced in slightly modified form in Brees' "Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand", Plate 19, no 56. London, 1847. The commentary accompanying the image in that publication states: "The Catholic Chapel is situated at Te Aro near the beach. The Catholic Pastor is represented by the Rev Father O'Reily, who is highly respected among his flock, as well as by all who have the pleasure of his acquaintance. The road shown to the right in the picture leads from the beach along the sides of the hills to Wellington Terrace".
