Description: A reproduction of Brees' watercolour showing the Catholic Chapel on the corner of Boulcott and Manners Streets, the site later occupied by the church of St Mary of the Angels. On the road or path in the centre foreground, a man in a suit and top hat stands with two women. The single-level wooden church has a cross on the ridgepole, and a bell hung from a frame in the grounds some metres away. At the left is a shed, a barrel and a sawhorse. At the right a couple look down from a slightly raised path on a slope, and there are hills in the background. This digital print was designed and printed by New Zealand Micrographic Services Ltd, in 2008. Accompanied by a sheet giving the quotation, and the location of the original. This image was reproduced in slightly modified form in Brees' "Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand", Plate 19, no 56. London, 1847. The commentary accompanying the image in that publication states: "The Catholic Chapel is situated at Te Aro near the beach. The Catholic Pastor is represented by the Rev Father O'Reily, who is highly respected among his flock, as well as by all who have the pleasure of his acquaintance. The road shown to the right in the picture leads from the beach along the sides of the hills to Wellington Terrace". Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Shows lake in distance; party hunting wild pig in foreground with dogs, worrying the pig. The party includes a Maori man dressed in traditional costume. In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. Plate 4, No 10, text p. 9. Brees stresses the value of the flat land in this area, its quality for farming and the building of part of a road across the Rimutaka Range. Brees spent some time in the Wairarapa surveying until the New Zealand Company suspended its operations in 1844, so the engraving is presumably based on a drawing completed between 1842 (Brees' year of arrival in New Zealand) and 1844. Description: Shows three Maori men and a European hunting a boar with dogs; the Maori men are dressed in traditional clothes and have moko. Three of the party are carrying firearms, while one Maori man is spearing the boar from the back with a taiaha. The area shown as plains in Brees' original engraving is shown as a lake or broad river behind the group. An Italian adaptation of plate IX (after a drawing by Brees made in the early 1840s) in Wakefield, E J Illustrations to Adventures in New Zealand. London 1845 (f919.31) This version of Brees' lithograph was first published in Das Buch der Welt (Stuttgart, Hoffmann, 1842-) a long-running illustrated German encyclopaedia. This print was published as plate 15 in the issue for 1863. It appears to be from an Italian edition of Das Buch der Welt and bears the same imprint (the date and numbers below) as the original German impression. There is no visible text in Italian on the print, apart from the very faint remains of offprinting of text from the page opposite, from the volume in which this engraving was originally published Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - 1863, lower left; 15 lower right Quantity: 1 colour art print(s).
