A view of a partly-excavated chalk pit with obvious stratal. A geologist in a top hat is hammering at a pile of chalk in the foreground, chalk is burning in an incinerator in the centre and a woman and child are walking by to the left
A proof sheet, untrimmed to fit the page size of the publication. The author's copy of The fossils of the South Downs, held by the Library, includes a watercolour version of this aquatint as a frontispiece. The watercolour is trimmed around the profile of the tops of the chalk cliffs
