Description

View along and around a bend in the river with the Pioneer in the centre, with smoke from its guns, and gunsmoke or fire from the left shore, either being attacked or attacking. Trees in the foreground and the river shown heavily bushed to its edges except where the Maori position is indicated. Based on a drawing by E A Williams

The wood engraving of which this is a photograph was published in Illustrated London news, vol 44, p.93, January 1864. Library holds the original volume in question.

Herbert Baillie presented a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society, 21 October 1919, published in Transactions and proceedings of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Vol 53, 1921, p 29-36: 'The first New Zealand Navy; with some episodes of the Maori War in connection with the British Navy'. The article was illustrated with this image, along with others of gunboats in used on the Waikato River, 1863-1864
