Description: A lecture on the career of Hannibal Marks, who arrived in New Plymouth in 1841 and later became captain of HM Colonial gun-boats Caroline and Sandfly. Includes copies of official correspondence with Captain Marks, 1861-1863 The "Caroline", originally the "Ruby", was a schooner of 25 tons, built in 1860 at Omaha, North Auckland, by Jas S Meiklejohn. She was purchased by the government to be fitted as a gun-boat to protect the Manukau waters, and used in this capacity from 1860 to 1863 when she reverted to the name "Ruby". As the Ruby, she was wrecked on Walker Rock, Jackson's Head, Cook Strait, on 23 April 1879.
