Description

Copy painted by Mr Duppa, February 1848.

A head and shoulders portrait of the crucified Christ, wearing a crown of thorns, his eyes raised. Painted by Mr Duppa as a copy of Guido Reni's 'Le Christ au roseau dit aussi Ecce Homo'.

Donated as 'Copied by Mr Duppa', later interpreted as 'by J A Duppa'. No record of a J A Duppa as an artist has been found. The inscription could be an error for English artist Bryan Edward Duppa or may correctly read 'Mr Duppa' and refer to New Zealand settler, George Duppa, who was a friend of Walter Mantell's
