Comprise the journals of the first expedition (Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tahiti) 1951-1953; the second expedition (Tahiti, Cook Islands, Tikehau, Ra'ivavae, New Zealand, Australia, European ethnological museums) 1954-1955; the third expedition (Society Islands, Austral Islands, Cook Islands, Fiji) 1957-1958; the fourth expedition (Tuamotu Islands, Tahiti, Moorea, Hawaii, Fiji) 1959; the fifth expedition (Tahiti) 1960.
Marshall describes the journals as a compromise between a personal diary and field notes. More detailed data was kept separately. Page numbers of his field notebooks are entered in square brackets for cross referencing purposes
