Description

Journals, letters, memoirs and other papers of explorers, navigators, missionaries, botanists, nurses, doctors, teachers, businessmen, diplomats, whalers and the military who were active in the Pacific. Includes archives of Pacific nations and organisations and others having an influence there.

The largest group is the New England Whaling Project (420 reels).

An associated group, PMB Doc(uments) contains printed material; books, newspapers and periodicals and is held by, and accessed through, the Reference Section (440 reels).

In 2014 the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau began creating digitised copies of Pacific collections, rather than microfilm, which are catalogued at ATL-Group-00169.

The Pacific Manuscripts Bureau was established in April 1968 `to promote the preservation of unpublished documents of value relating to the Pacific Islands'. A non-profit making organisation, it is sponsored by four libraries specialising in Pacific research: the Mitchell Library, Sydney; the National Library of Australia, Canberra; the Library of the University of Hawaii, Honolulu and the National Library of New Zealand, represented by the Alexander Turnbull Library.

Finding Aids: Most of the collections have been catalogued separately. The extensive inventory comprises: short titles in PMB number order; an index of main entries and subjects and the main inventory comprising one descriptive sheet for each collection in PMB number order.

Published guides include: `American whalers and traders in the Pacific: a guide to records on microfilm' (Canberra: ANU, 1978) providing indexes of ships; captains/logkeepers; places visited; items located but not filmed; obsolete names to modern equivalents and vise versa and `Where the whalers went: an index to Pacific ports and islands visited by American whalers ... in the nineteenth century (Canberra: ANU, 1984) both edited by Robert Langdon.
