Captions on back of file print reads "First paling school at Ruatahuna built in 1918 by Rev. Fletcher and Laughton assisted by local Maoris. Sister Annie and Miss Monfries started the first mission school in Feb. 1917 in a 3-roomed whare owned by Chief Taiwera. The following year the government supplied materials for this 2-roomed schoolhouse." Shows a single storey building with children playing in the yard. Photographed circa 1920 by an unidentified photographer.
