Description: Christine Fay Hatchard born Masterton. Backgrounds nursing career from the age of 13 years when she was employed as a nurse aide at Masterton Hospital during school holidays. Commenced nursing training at Tauranga Hospital ca 1964. Gives reasons for leaving and recalls work as a cook in a Bible College at Welcome Bay. Mentions helping to start a new church on the North Shore before going to Thailand with Ann Crawford. Also mentions teaching experience at Thomset University in Bangkok. On returning to New Zealand worked at Masterton, relieving the Charge Medical technician and describes duties which included lung function tests, thyroid function tests etc. Discusses return to practical nursing, on night duty for a year before appointment to Rotorua as Charge nurse in CCU (1978-1981). Recalls doing advanced Diploma at ATI (Auckland Technical Institute). Discusses tertiary education, commencing at Massey University and changing to Waikato. Discusses differences in cross creditings. On completion of B Soc. Sci was appointed as Medical Ward supervisor with CCU as a special responsibility, also undertook sessions at Polytechnic as visiting tutor. Recalls being president of NZNA (New Zealand Nurses Association). Explains that, despite a large Maori population, there were few Maori choosing nursing as a career, and while there were many reasons why this was so, some promotion of nursing as a career for Maori students was required. Refers to Manu Paul. Discusses the Gibbs Report. Discusses the difference in the two systems of preparing student nurses and reflects on own nurse-aide hospital experience with enormous responsibility, citing an experience of a house surgeon and aide doing a pleural tap. Mentions `Buddy' system. Discusses the struggle between Tauranga and Rotorua regarding the new Polytechnic.
