Description

Photographs of the following locomotives: D Class, E Class (including double Fairlie engines at Wanganui and Wellington), J Class, K Class, L Class, S Class, S & D Class, V Class, W Class, mostly with staff at railway stations, including Christchurch, Wanganui and the engine sheds at Pipitea. The two which are not at stations are of sheep being transported on the Ladle Bend on the Wairarapa line and another on the curve near the summit of the Rimutaka Incline. Also included is a train with passengers and timber at the Rimutaka summit with the railway houses behind it. Photographer unidentified.

Description: Double Fairlie locomotive under construction, at Pipitea Station, Thorndon Quay, Wellington, photographed in 1876. St Paul's Church is in the background. Man in foreground unidentified. Photographer also unidentified. Note on back of file print reads: "At Pipitea Station, Wgtn's first station. This locomotive was being erected at the southern end of the station yard. It was built by the Avonside Engine Co. of Bristol, England, in 1875, and dismantled, shipped to Wellington and erected there in 1876. It made its first trip on the 5pm train to Upper Hutt on 23rd Sept 1876. As far as is known it was transferred in mid 1878 to the Wanganui section." Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Description: V class steam locomotive, WMR (Wellington and Manawatu Railway) number 7, 2-6-2 type, photographed between 1885-1922 at an unidentified location, by an unidentified photographer. Note on back of file print reads: "c.n from album print no 3342" This locomotive was built by Nasmyth Wilson of Manchester, England, in 1885. It was taken over by NZR (New Zealand Railways) in 1908 and re-numbered 451V. It was written off in 31 March 1922.
