Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: Photographs of the following locomotives: D Class, E Class (including double Fairlie engines at Wanganui and Wellington), J Class, K Class, L Class, S Class, S & D Class, V Class, W Class, mostly with staff at railway stations, including Christchurch, Wanganui and the engine sheds at Pipitea. The two which are not at stations are of sheep being transported on the Ladle Bend on the Wairarapa line and another on the curve near the summit of the Rimutaka Incline. Also included is a train with passengers and timber at the Rimutaka summit with the railway houses behind it. Photographer unidentified. Description: "R" 53; an R class steam locomotive (0-6-4T type). Taken by an unidentified photographer, before 1890. This image is a glass copy negative taken from a print by Albert Percy Godber. Inscriptions: Marginal notes on negative - top right - R "R" 53 was built by Avonside, England (Maker's No 1222/78), went into service as "R" 3, in 1882 renumbered "R" 53, and in 1890 renumbered "R" 273. The "R" 53 number was part of the Railways Department first scheme of numbers, this one being used on the Auckland section. Written off in February 1927. Description: 'Snake', a Fairlie's Patent, B class steam locomotive, B 238, and two unidentified men alongside. Photograph taken between 1874 and 1892 (by Albert Percy Godber?) probably in the Auckland Region. A print from this negative is at PA1-q-101 (Godber Album vol 108, page 6.) 'Snake' was built at Avonside Engine Co., Bristol, went into service in September 1874, and was written off in 1890 (according to "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G lloyd), written off in 1892 according to the caption in the Godber album vol 108, p 6.
