- Description
Shows a red-cloaked figure with a spear making a speech to a seated circle of armed and cloaked men, before a large-trunked tree in bush. At right a shallow cliff drops to a beach with 6 canoes drawn up, and seven figures standing beside them. In the right distance are three sailboats, and on the horizon, part of an island or headland.
Previously attributed at different times to Charles Blomfield (according to Graham Chote of International Art Centre, Parnell), and to Nicholas Chevalier.
Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated.

Physical Description: Oil on canvas on board, 180 x 305 mm.
Provenance: Bought with another small oil by the same hand (G-230-2), by Dr Neville Hogg, Dargaville, at International Art Centre, Auckland, 1976. Sold at Peter Webb's auction, Auckland 12 August 1993, lot 226 to John Crowder.
