Artist, traveller. Born in St Petersburg, the son of Swiss parents, he studied art and architecture in Rome, Lausanne, London and Munich. He became naturalised in England. Went to Australia in 1855. Married Caroline Wilkie in Melbourne in 1857. Arrived in Dunedin in November 1865, travelled around the South Island and returned to Melbourne in August 1866. He returned to New Zealand in November-December 1868 visiting New Zealand again in April-May 1869 with the Duke of Edibnburgh aboard the Galatea. The Duke's party with Chevalier travelled on to Tahiti, Hawaii (18 July to 2 August) and Japan. See DNZB (Vol 1, 1769-1869)
