Shows a Kanak woman of New Caledonia standing beside the kagou, a rare bird of the island. She is wearing a skirt of leaves and has a board strapped to her back for carrying objects, a staff in her right hand and a small bag in her left. To the right is a small house with a round roof.
Derived with adjustments from an engraving 'View in the Island of New Caledonia' after William Hodges, artist on Cook's second voyage, published 1777, pl. 50. See also a close copy of this engraving drawn by Francesco Galimberti in his album Natives of America and the Pacific Islands, ca. 1786 (E-215-q-009).
