He still lives at the village of Pitone, loved and respected by the English inhabitants of all ranks. Description: Contains a facsimile copy of a hand written manuscript by Te Uremutu Hakaraia Kiharoa at the dictation of aged chiefs of the Ngati Raukawa, Otaki district. Contains numerous waiata later published by Sir George Grey in "Nga Moteatea me nga Hakirara o nga Maori" including waiata for Te Heuheu Mananui, Papaka Te Naeroa all of Ngati Tuwharetoa; Werawera of Ngati Toa; one waiata "whakawai moko"; numerous waiata whakaoriori tamaiti. One waiata [p.95] which contains referecnes to Tuhoe, Ngati Kahungunu and the Wairarapa, and mentions the mere pounamu "Heketua" which originally travelled through these tribes before being acquired by Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Mentions her mother's laughter, singing, social work, working as a buyer at a drapery store and at the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen, buying a section of land. Describes her cooking techniques, her hospitalisation and death following childbirth. Relates that her brother was cared for by the Home of Compassion and explains how she and her siblings coped after mother's death. Recalls her stepmother and housekeepers, and being in an orphanage. Explains her father's background and surname, mentions the family sweet factory in Lyttelton, his job as a clerical worker at Army Headquarters, his long service medal, working for the Post Office. Recalls family picnics at Happy Valley and Wilton Bush. Describes soap making and the making of a clothes drying rack. Talks about her brother Joe, a favourite with grandmother, his poliomyelitis and Maori medicinal treatment, Scouts membership, his work as messenger boy with DIC department store, buying a new coat on hire purchase. Recalls the polio epidemic and the infant vaccine. Mentions the deaths of schoolmates from pneumonia, scarlet fever and tuberculosis. Explains making up stories, her enjoyment of reading and music. Discusses homework, sport, religion and confession in convent schools. Talks of values taught by nuns. Mentions contraception. Talks of her children's role in leaving the catholic church, joining the Christian Family Movement. Explains that she left school to look after her stepmother's first child who changed family relationships. Relates that her sister worked at Mecca Tearooms, talks of the minimum wage. Gives reasons for leaving home, describes being a nurse-aide, training at Masterton Hospital, talks about career options. Recalls meeting Johnny Leniston, his Fleet Air Arm and Army service, details war experiences, having a rehabilitation farm on his return from war, exploitation by a farmer at Awakino. Mentions kindly neighbours. Talks of pre-war engagement and post-war marriage, with a consent obtained from a magistrate. Explains the system of post war employment for returned servicemen.
