Matariki: Bringing our stars to life — Te āhuatanga o te kaupapa

Part of Matariki 2024 series

The rising of the Matariki star cluster signals the start of Matariki, the Māori New Year. Join our kaiwhakaako at Pātaka Art + Museum in Porirua for three days of Matariki learning experiences. Mānawatia a Matariki!

Experience the magic of Matariki

Nau mai, te whetū o te tau!

We are taking our popular Matariki event on the road. Join us in Porirua at Pātaka Art + Museum.

Educators from He Tohu Pōneke (Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa National Library of New Zealand) will share how Te Kāhui o Matariki connects us to people, to whānau and to the rhythms and seasons of the natural world.

Using a whāriki star map and special glowing pīataata (star globes), come and share the magic of Matariki this Hōtoke season. We’ll mihi, sing and tuku karakia to our loved ones who have passed and make wishes to Hiwa-i-te-rangi for the year ahead!

Mātauranga Māori shared by He Tohu Tāmaki and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

Suitable for children 6 years and older.

About the speakers

Ko Matariki e, te tohu o te tau. Ko tēnei, he kaupapa ātaahua ki te hāpai ngā mahi e whakawhānui ana te mōhiotanga o Matariki.

With the knowledge shared by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and our awesome team at He Tohu Tāmaki, ‘Matariki: Bringing Our Stars to Life’ connects us to Ngā Atua Māori, the pūrākau of Matariki (e ai ki te kōrero o Te Whare Wānanga) and how we honour this season of the Maramataka.
